'Invisible Friend'

Invisible friend I can see you still,
You left too soon -- against your will,
Now the days grow short in light,
As the time grows near when you took your flight.

There is not a day I don't think of you,
And all the things we used to do,
Until that day you went away,
To seek new rising sunny days.

I sit across from our favorite place,
While in my mind I see your face,
It sparkles with joy, like sun on the water,
While you discuss your plans with your surrogate daughter.

Two years have almost slipped away,
Yet my heart feels like it was yesterday,
And the memories you left, dear friend of mine,
Will stay with me 'till the end of time.

Rusty Blackwood.
(c) 2010

~ There is a quaint little restaurant located in the country village of Vineland, Ontario,
near the shores of Lake Ontario, where a dear, elderly friend and I used to frequent
usually once a week. We patronized it so much, I'm sure we became known as weekly staples.
We always sat in the same booth, each on our own side respectively, where our interesting
conversations took us throughout the world. We were close friends for the better part of
twenty-five years, until her untimely passing on Christmas Eve 2008. I stopped at this
restaurant late this afternoon, as I often do, and sat across from our table. As I sat there,
I felt her presence, it was as if she were there enjoying a meal with me once again. It was a
wonderful feeling, and I enjoyed it immensely. I miss her, and my feelings today inspired this
poem tonight. ~ R.B.
