DUSTY TRUNK IN THE ATTIC

DUSTY TRUNK IN THE ATTIC

I found a dusty trunk in the attic from long ago
sitting alone in the dark unopened for years

I raised the lid and looked inside
There was memorabilia my granddad and grandma had saved

A box in the shape of a heart lay on the top
I opened and looked inside

Letters tied together with a faded pink ribbon
were in a stack

The smell of crushed roses filled my nostrils
I opened the one on top

Granddad had wrote simple words
"I don't know what tomorrow will bring
We are moving out, but remember I love you each and every day
Hold little Conner in your arms and kiss
his brow for me, tell him that his papa loves him and his mother"

Beneath the box was a folded Army uniform
I picked up its jacket and hugged it to my breast

"Grandpa, come see what I found" I called
He and grandma came up the steps

He wiped at moisture in his eyes as he slipped the coat on
It didn't quite meet in the front but he looked so handsome in it

Grandma with eyes full of pride smiled at him and said
"no more apple pie for you for awhile"

*We have so much to thank our Veterans for
we can never repay them for the freedoms we have
I pray we will hold them dear to our hearts always
