The Eyes Of The Mothers
I read history in the text books…dates and kings-
This army did that and that noble stood ground
And this mob cried freedom and constitutions were written-
But I see history written in the American kitchens where I work.
“I left Mexico to send money home to my kids.” She never
Read our history books. But I see in her-
The eyes of my many great, great grandmothers
Who left England not knowing what dangers faced them
But knowing that it would be better then what they left behind-
In this, the wilderness of America.
The eyes of the mothers are not in the history books.
