 For The Life Of Me

From the far side of yesterday to the middle of the night
My thoughts held sway over life and all its wonder.
From deep inside myself to the horizon of my sight
I unravelled all my dreams and tore them asunder....

~

Leaving only purest light and just the whisper of a sound
I chased the where and why of all things I used to dread
Nothing was left uncovered but nothing was profound
As what was left of me rattled around inside my head....

~

Too much time on the bottom floor, padlock on my door
Fearing to climb the stair to see if demons were there
Missing all the fun and play and friends and so much more
Afraid of shadows in the night, disliking daylight's glare....

~

I remember the day I finally cut loose the anchor holding me
People asked each other 'who is this child, I don't know him'
I wasn't hell bent for leather but I was rolling free
Living life within myself, having nothing to show them.....

~

Time passes, subtle changes transform us all along the way
With feet firmly on solid ground, suddenly nothing slowed me
I threw away all the childish games I never wanted to play
Delving deeply into many books and what they showed me....

~

It ill behooves the best or worst of us to beat our own drum
Suffice it to say I removed myself from the noise of the fray
Along the way were the dregs of life and yes I tasted some
But climbed a mountain or two somewhere along the weary way....

~

Never succinct, metaphors do me well as to what's within
Now I'm the age at which there is nothing left to thrill me
I no longer keep a diary on what's good or what's a sin
And I no longer fear anyone or anything that could kill me
To all out there whom I owe because of the fool I've been
I won't be paying you anytime soon but you can bill me....
