DAY BEGINS
The flame in the lamplight flickered and spat
Daybreak stroked a greeting to sleeping eyes
And birds chirped their daily call
Milk bottles clinked and postman's steps quickened
To battle a race to the corner of the street
Against a wind which whistled in tune
Footsteps shuffled along pavements toward train station
Nods exchanged in morning duty
Work waiting, the in-tray bulging before 9
A sea of mask-like faces, bleary eyed
Thrust cruelly from bedcovers
To a world of sobering thought
