Three dollars a book...
Benches of books
in the mall appear -
stacked tightly and high -
just published last year...
I flip through them quickly
as shoppers pass by -
each holding a heartbeat -
a shiver - a sigh...
A lifetime of loving -
a moment of mirth -
a flash of adventure -
a long ago birth...
Worn wrinkled faces
grin through the mist -
in loose faded clothing
in pages still crisp...
Soldiers and sailors -
philosophers too -
poets and prophets -
whisper their views...
Not enough readers -
too many words -
all fighting attention -
all want to be heard...
Discounted early -
to empty the shelves -
for all the new writers
expressing themselves...
Three dollars a book -
bursting with thought -
that beg to be read -
that beg to be bought...
