*I must give you the story behind this poem I wrote, that is very close
to my heart as this remarkable child was to all around her. Friends of
mine had a most wonderful and beautiful child, dying of heart trouble.
Four years old and the sweetest baby doll. You know the type, big sad
eyes, gorgeous hair and a face the Angels had to have kissed.
This was my friends first child and finding it very hard to say, "good-bye".
My heart was full for the three of them. They knew I wrote poetry and ask
me to come to their apartment when they finished at the hospital, they had
a favor to ask? I would do anything for them. After all, that was My God-
Child. I was asked to put their words into a poem about how they wanted to
say, "good-bye", when the time came near; if possible. I never had been
asked to do anything like this before. But when I looked into their eyes I
couldn't say anything but Yes.
So when they received the word that they needed to rush to the hospital,
they called me to meet them there. The poem had already been written weeks
back. They were prepared to read it like a story-poem to say good night.
Let me tell you how wonderful that moment was in all our lives that night,
even the two nurses and the Priest. This is what they said to their child
that night. They memorized every word and delivered with all the love they
had in their souls. There certainly was magic in that room, and the glowing
smile on that little Angels face told the story that she knew where she was
going that night. We watched the three of them hug and heard that Angel say
"Don't cry mommy and daddy; don't".......
GOD WOULD BUT GRANT YOU WINGS
This day, God would but grant you wings
You will see heaven and amazing things
You're here in my arms, I now must release
You will fly on tiny wings of love and peace
I wish I had wings, this would be my dream
Together we'd fly over fields and streams
I must be realistic when I look at your sweet face
This journey you must take alone in God's good grace
It's very hard for mom and dad to say their last good-bye
We'll look for your tiny wings amongst the stars in the sky
Your wings will sparkle and the Angels will sing
For this day, God would but grant you wings.
