Those of us who live in The Land of the Free
cannot fully understand what happens
to a people oppressed/suppressed for 30 years
by the heavy-handed power of just one man.
A whole generation has been raised
not knowing anything but fear
and, all too often, loathing.
It would easy, any can see,
to want to punish those who have
jailed, tortured, and even killed
their friends, neighbors,
and thousands unknown.
The need for retribution,
as understandable as that might be,
risks robbing those
instantly set free
of becoming just as bad.
That would be so sad.
My prayer is that, regardless of how justified retribution may feel,
that there might be some consideration of amnesty.
Those who are known to have been overly cruel
probably do need to pay a price.
Perhaps they were driven or born insane.
Perhaps they saw no other way
to put food onto their family's table.
Only the torturer and murderer know
when or how they crossed the unforgivable line
freeing their humanity to commit their unforgivable crimes.
Perhaps the thugs who still persist
in following the old, hard line
fear for their lives and those they love.
Who can know what is in their mind?
Rumor has it some are even thugging
for some dollars and dimes!
However, perhaps there is a way
to consider a path to deal with all of this
when Egypt wins Her Freedom Bliss.
Without a doubt, there are thugs
that need to heal from their inhumane insanity.
Some may never be able to do so.
Their are laws to sort this all out.
There is no lack of community service
that can earn restitution and
maybe heal many lost thug souls.
I do know that freedom will be polluted,
if justification for painful retribution
trumps lawful justice and love.
As Freedom meets the dawn,
let it be a new day,
for all, all around.
