Poetic-Verses

'' To Allow Us To Live Today ''

I'm being forced to visit my Grandpa,
I find that a bit of a chore,
what does he know about anything,
I think he's a bit of a bore.

He's old and grey that's the truth,
what does he know about life,
while I am young and full of zest,
these visits just give me  strife.

My Mum and Dad are really old,
as if that's not bad enough,
but Grandpa's really ancient,
talking to him is tough.

One day I spoke to my Grandpa,
just to listen to what he had to say,
he told me about his life when young,
as if it were just yesterday.

I never thought old people were ever young,
I never gave it much thought,
But the stories my Grandpa was telling me,
were making me feel rather fraught.

He once had a life much the same as mine,
there was playing he laughed and  he cried,
his elders he was always taught to respect,
to that end he always tried.

He'd get into trouble while playing games,
I'd say much the same as me,
football was among his favourite games,
I was now beginning to see.

He said he was shy when girls appeared,
I am exactly the same,
though he'd loved to have talked to them,
he couldn't they made him feel lame.

He then told me he'd fought in the Gulf war,
that's a fact I didn't know,
the horrors of war he experienced,
made my respect for this man grow.

He witnessed his friends being killed every day,
to ensure our future was bright,
despite this he never wavered,
because he knew his principles were right.

When the fighting was over,
a victory had finally been achieved,
he said  he'd never regret the war,
because they'd fought for what they believed.

Now here was a man I never knew well,
who had taken time out to reflect,
how could I not have asked him before,
he at least deserved my respect.

He told me he then worked as an engineer,
building engines for ships and trains,
training countless apprentices,
to ensure that our future remains.

These tales of his life enlightened me,
very much to my surprise,
older people  were really interesting,
he had really opened my eyes.

Generations who have went before,
are our future as well as our past,
we must never forget their sacrifice,
our gratitude to them must last

I will never look at my elders again,
thinking they are so out of date,
if it wasn't for them and their bravery,
we'd have suffered a different fate.

What my Grandpas talk has taught me,
is respect just has to be earned,
never judge a book by its cover,
it's the content that has to be learned.

So please accept our gratitude,
that's the very least our elders deserve,
we'll endeavour to make you proud of us,
your history we'll forever preserve.

We must never forget their sacrifice,
so for them take some time out to pray,
these people gave up their tomorrow,
