I SANG YOU TO SLEEP

I sang you to sleep after the lovin'
And brushed the tear from your eye
It was time to say goodnight, my love
It was time to say goodbye
Tomorrow I must fly back home, I said
And I promised not to cry.

I said you would always remain
                    Right here in my heart
That God would watch over us
                    So we'd never be apart.

                    I believed -- I was such a fool
But life sometimes is very cruel
                    Yes, I promised that I wouldn't cry
As I left you there to die.
