 Contemporary poetry by Dan Donlan

SUFFERING

She was orphaned young
Her brother living in boys town
She living with Mormons
In Salt Lake City
Family in San Francisco
Married an abusive husband
Beaten and locked out of
the house left in a snowstorm
Broken noses and cracked ribs
She raised us three kids
What she never suffered
Was faith in Jesus
On her dying bed she said to me,
"Tell the Doctor I have died
Don't worry Dandy
Jesus is here to get me."
The room took over a quiet calm
I did not suffer for I knew
Jesus had come to take her home
