Coalition Government

(Or how to be All Things to All Men)

He's the Leader of his Party
And he has been for a while
And he does it with integrity
Charisma charm and style:
When he says yes he means yes
Except when he means no
But he could also mean a maybe
Depending on how things go,

And The Grand Old Duke of York
Is the new faithful song
And he leads from the front
As they all sing along.
Some folk call him a cynic,
Some a lying bleeder,
But you have to compromise
When you're The Party Leader.

He's maybe learnt the lesson
In his new found fame,
It's easy to speak in opposition
But in power's a different game.
When he speaks in the affirmative
Does he mean a no or a maybe or yes
And all those loyal party faithful
Have to grit their teeth and guess.
