Do you remember where...

Do you remember where you were when man stepped on the moon,
Or what you were doing when John F Kennedy died much too soon,
The assassination of his brother Bobby, left us stunned in misbelief,
Leaving us wondering how a family could survive its loss and grief,

Do you remember where you were when Cassius Clay won that fight,
Against man mountain Sonny Liston, reputedly unbeatable on the night,
Becoming the greatest ever boxer, a master and genius of the noble art,
To witness the skill of a pure athlete with a confidence as big as his heart,

Do you remember where you were when Apollo thirteen said to the ground,
"We have a problem Houston" for which a lifesaving solution must be found,
A world collectively held its breath and waited for news they hoped would come.
Of the safe return of the brave astronauts to their families waiting at home,

Do you remember where you were when the Beetles were top of the pops,
When screaming and hysterical youngsters were a nightmare for the cops,
When the British invasion of the United States forever turned music on it's head,
Leaving behind the shackles of post war melodies, forging a new sound instead,

Do you remember where you were when Chernobyl exploded into a cloud,
Sending toxic radio-active dust drifting across most of Europe like a shroud,
To the people of Kiev some good fortune as the material drifted to the west,
But the soviets confronted a disaster, Russians now facing their stiffest test,

Do you remember where you were when they knocked down the Berlin wall,
In East Germany a peaceful democracy movement led to a re-unification call,
When families embraced long lost loved ones, many had grown old while apart,
Now the democratic seeds of freedom sown, and for many this was just the start,

Will you remember where you were, when this year becomes a time long past,
The spectre of tragedy and foreboding with a long shadow its darkness cast,
With cyclones, earthquakes and flooding in Australia, New Zealand and Japan,
Will we also remember the silent heroes, creating new hope wherever they can
