 Into the Sunset

Aging gracefully as time passes, I continue to run;
No longer am I fast, but I still get the job done.
My goals now days are not set with the stopwatch;
But by running one more day, mark up another notch.

Seasons come, and seasons go, winter's seem colder;
Still pounding the asphalt, gently along the shoulder.
Trails call me some days into the woods to jog;
Early mornings, the rising sun burns away the fog.

Peace enters my soul as one foot rolls over the other;
Join me, you instantly become my sister or brother.
Therapy of the Asics, healing me one mile at a time;
Looking up the road, I still have many hills to climb.

I'm no longer a racer, happy to plod along this road;
Gentle thoughts encompass me, peace is bestowed.
A Zen-like stillness in the center of my soul rests;
Ready for another run, another one of my quests.

Never stop… no, never stop plodding myself along;
An athlete? Who cares… when I run, I have a song.
When will it be time to hang up my Asics? Not yet.
As long as I have breath, I will run into the sunset.

I have a tattoo on my right arm of a silhouette running
into the sunset up a mountain... this poem expresses
that tattoo's meaning. I love running...
