Letter To Sally

My Precious Friend,
I just wanted to tell you that, no matter how I tried,
I couldn't find my son Stevie after he died. I was told by
my little granddaughter Emily that Stevie lived in my heart,
but that didn't help. I kept photos of him all over the
house and played recordings of "Somewhere Over the
Rainbow," because I tried to tell myself that Stevie was
up there in Heaven, far above the clouds where I couldn't
see him. I also wrote to and about him constantly, as you
are writing to, and about Faron. It was easier for me at
that time, because my dear Milt was always around to care
 for me.
After many years had passed, I came to feel that there
truly is a mystery which God does not reveal to us who are in
mourning -- and that one day this mystery will be solved. I
like to believe the answer is that our loved ones are still
with us and will never go away, because they have become part
of us.
In the meantime, all that I can do is try to console the
people I care about who are suffering as I was -- and am --
suffering on this planet that we call Earth.
Sally, you have brought sunshine into so many lives,
including mine. I love you, my friend.
