Memories to keep

Squandered friendships remembered with reverence
looking back through the pages of time
some were of merit,
but too few like the real thing
friendship seemed so hard to find.

Holding out hands I welcomed in strangers
but mostly finding only those in need
some had good reason,
most were just reaching
like vultures that swooped down to feed.

Adolescence attacked me with out any warning
everything that I knew quickly changed
the sun was still shining,
the night-time still darkened
but now demons would scream out my name.

Storms and high seas would see me still searching
climbing mountains taught me to see
the valleys and jungles,
both man made and natural
were part of this world given me.

Now time is fast calling the end of the evening
soon I will lay down to sleep
maybe dreams will be realised,
while time keeps on moving
and memories my loved ones will keep.
