 ramblings and things

Claude Stanley "Chuckles" Schoules -  3rd March 1901 – 5th May 2011

the last known combat survivor of
the great war has passed and gone
ninety three years almost since it ended
in so any ways the world has moved on

we kill more efficiently these days
the leader of a nation of great wealth
watches by beamed live transmissions
as a terrorist leader is killed by stealth
the fanatics of different strands of faith
freely kill in the cause and the name
of an omnipotent all merciful god
without any seeming regret or shame

while the world moves inexorably on
towards a predicted but disputed range
of disasters and calamities resulting
from a devastating climate change

what did the last combat survivor think
from the distance of a very great age
did he regret a lost youth
or did he silently rage
at the short-sightedness of
the people in their nations
as the world for which he fought
rushes to a maybe final disintegration

Is a god still in its heaven
does it really still care
or does it  have both eyes tightly
shut in disgust and deep despair
