Parades

The last Great War survivor gone
and one part of the military past
after ninety three years
is just history at last.

No more of those veterans
at any remembrance day parade
just grateful thoughts and memories
of the contributions they made.

And every year from now on
increasingly as never before
more wounded and scarred
from the politicians' latest war.

The survival rate grows
thanks to new medical skills
many more maimed that
previously would've been kills.

The vast knowledge gained
from the modern battlefield
is passed to civilian life
with increased survival yield.

Will the people remember
the price that was paid
for every single piece
of such progress made?

And the politicians are safe
for many more years
for their annual parade
and show of crocodile tears.
