LAST GOODBYE

**Author's Note: I don't presume to know the pain of losing a spouse or significant other in death, but death comes to relationships in many ways. This poem is dedicated to all of those who have lost someone to the tragedy of war or terrorism. Life will never be the same...

one last goodbye Pictures, Images and Photos

My tears were silent
as we all stood there;
feeling the spring sun
on my bowed head
but not feeling
warmth, only
chill gray

Gray is the color
of everything in
my life these
days,
since the day
you came home
prone and
still

I wonder
to myself…

Is this real?

How could the warm,
loving man I knew
be replaced by
a cold, hardly
recognizable
thing...

called
by his name?

The only answer that
came to mind
in that
moment
was

it's not him,
I'm dreaming…

Pressing my face against
cool, hard granite now
it seems surreal

my leaden arms wrap ‘round
the black obelisk
and I feel
lettering

your name…

the dates…

your favorite
quote…

it suddenly dawns
that the stone
represents
your life

but what it really means
is the end

of mine.
