 244. Legacy
(inspired by Art from Ashes)

Mom needed…
Encouragement
Acceptance
Belief .

Dad needed…
Love
Tenderness
Kindness.

They were
Diametric opposites.

He was sharp
Intelligent
Distant,
& cruel.

She was
Intuitive
Warm
& spineless.

He hit us
She let him.

I didn't
Want to be
Anything like
Either one
Of them.

Even if
I don't like
What happened
To me
What they lacked
What they gave
I did
The best I could
And I love
Who I am
Even if their
Idea of love
Was messed up,
Their legacy
Is that
They taught me
What I didn't
Want to
Be…
Like them…
I am
Like me…
And I like that
A whole
Lot better.

My legacy
Is that I will not
Pass on that
Poison.

My legacy
Is my poetry
And art
And the lives
I touch
Along the way,
And if their lack
Lead to such
Beauty
Well then
I guess they
Left something
Good after all
As their legacy,
Because it is
Me.
