Seems her need to say goodbye to
innocence was to be a
private one
But before doing so a nightly ritual
would take place as bedtime called
for special good-nights
Goodnight mommy, goodnight daddy
Goodnight moon, goodnight stars
Tired from a long day at play with eyes closing
he uttered one more, goodnight Vira
His mother moved by this placed her head
upon the rail of his bed and as she did
she felt a warm breeze gently
glide across her face
Not a window was open
A few days later, while at play Alejandro
would receive a visit, one overdue
He last saw her at rest and acknowledged
her as Vira, as Elvira seemed harder to say
and he opted for a verbal shortcut
In his room amongst the many toys
a conversation was taking place
Though personal it was overheard
and within earshot while mommy was washing
the dishes
His mother looked over and she could see
that Alejandro was speaking to someone
and curiosity drove her to see who
Sitting on the floor was her son
Alejandro reaching with Thomas the train
in hand as if handing it to someone
or getting it back, he then introduced
Donald the train to his special visitor
and then said
Vira, funny
Perplexed mommy then sat next to her son and asked,
Alejandro, where is abuelita?
He replied, she at door
She tired
She going to other door
and with that a bond that in life was held special
came to a close and Alejandro's encounters
for the moment are no more...

Alejandro who reassured me his great grandmother, my mother
made it home as I prayed she would
