 America

Hotdogs, hamburgers, and beer;
Watermelon and banana pudding.
On charcoal grills across this land,
We cook with our friends and family.
A baseball game starts in the field;
As we dream that dream once again.
Where are you, Mickey Mantle?
Where are you, Sandy Koufax?
Times change, yet America lives on;
In spite of the politicians,
In spite of the tax collectors,
In spite of the factories closing.
America.

Swimming pools full of the youngin's;
Homemade strawberry ice cream.
Tattered old gloves, a dirty ball;
The old bat is made out of ash.
Feeling like a kid on the diamond;
I know that tomorrow I will be sore.
Smiles and laughter overshadow
The desperate cry's of the working man.
Times change, yet America lives on;
In spite of health care skyrocketing,
In spite of the breakdown of the family,
In spite of the soaring cost of living.
America.

The sun sets on another 4th across our land;
This day of celebration almost done.
Fireworks that were bought across the state line;
We sit in awe of the colors and sounds.
Another beer, Free Bird on the stereo;
Southern rock always makes me proud.
Missing my son who is in Afghanistan tonight;
Standing guard for our freedom; I am thankful.
Times change, yet America lives on;
In spite of the loneliness I feel walking past his room,
In spite of knowing the danger he is in,
In spite of yet another war.
America.
