We Were... : Wolfsong 1

We were born (unknowing, unconsenting).
And we were named (unknowing, unchoosing).

We were loved (and only God knows the manner of that love).
We were cared for (will we care for others?)

We grew (seemingly without end)
We played (and in our imaginatins we rode upon winged horses
and destroyed evil before we knew what it really was).

We explored (only - as our mothers attest - with things and places
             dirty and dangerous).
We fought (suddenly and fiercely, but without true hate)

We were taught (and learned more then we wanted; more then
                we should have, too soon).

We aged year to year (And looked forward to 10, to 16, to 18, to 21
thinking we would then be wise and free)
We became strangers (mostly to our families, but sometimes to
ourselves- Howl! behold, a wolf is being born!).

Then one day we awoke (time? unknown; day? unknown; date? unknown).
And found we had become adults (how does it happen? When does it happen?)

We grew up (We became as others were; we entered the common herd; we were
            joined to the machines).
And we were killed - slowly (only we did not know it; only when we happened to
look behind us and see our own blood-trails
                            did we begin to understand).

   So now...

Mothers, forgive us; fathers, forgive us; God, forgive us (all the hate, all the rage,
all the pain, all the fear through all the years).
Forgive us, for we were born; and now, we die (may our memories be etrnal).

Howl! Howl! Howl!
Do you mourn the loss of childhood, the loss of innocence,
the loss of imagination? Do you lament the fact that there is
nothing honorable and worthy to die for? (For you will die
nontheless); come with me, and I will show you dying and death
of many different kinds and I will draw from you a single howl
that will go before you into the night were the others wait
and listen to your song.
