Battered Wife

She picked herself up like so many other times
she told herself she would walk away from him
but she never did
he kept hitting her, the bruises got bigger
she cried silent tears in the dark
she didn't want him to hear her
he might get up to beat her some more
blood already had formed pools on the floor
when he was asleep that is all the peace she ever had
every waking moment he was always mad
she didn't do this right, the meal wasn't any good
she didn't clean the house good enough
like he thought she should
this is the everyday life of a battered wife
one day the story does end
but not happily, but sadly millions of women die
because they never walked away or even tried to leave
the ones they leave behind can do nothing but grieve
for that mother, sister, aunt, cousin, or friend
who met an untimely tragic end
at the hands of an abusive man.

dedicated to all battered women, millions upon millions this happens to more than I think we will ever know.
