It's been 10 years
Since 9/11
And the world
Can recount
With utter clarity
When and where
They were…
Save one man
Who was on
National television
When it happened
And then
Later at a town
Hall meeting
Couldn't get
The story straight
That he was
In a classroom
When he
Heard the news…
How is it we
All dismiss this
So easily?
We remember
The loss of their
Lives and we
Sacrifice our
Rights by
Throwing them
On the funeral pyres.
It's been 10 years
And the patriot act
Not the terrorists
Have hijacked
Our rights
To due process
And freedom of
Speech.
I remember
That they died
To scare us
Into submission.
I remember that
We went
Without complaint
Or without a fight
Into a new
Dark age…
For which even
A president who
Meant to change
It all
Found out
That he couldn't
Undo what
Had been done
Before him.
I will be lucky
If I live so long
To see 9/11
Rights returned
To me
And my fellow
Americans.
I remember that day
And I weep.
I remember this day
And I weep,
Because we
Are still without
Our rights
And our senses
To complain
About returning
What is rightfully
Ours,
Stolen not
By terrorists
But by our own
Government.
