THE SPARROW AND SPACE
The nested fledgling sparrow
Stepped shyly out onto a limb.
There it met its Maker
On Mother Natures well worn rim.
Near alarm, the tiny thing
Almost fell to harm.
Its bearing quite unsteady still
Upon the old oak's arm.
The passing days of practice though
Quelled the sparrows quivering;
Gave birth to its new confidence
Until, one day it took to wing.
The creature animated
By God's own slight of hand
Brought to man its passion
As it soared the skies of promised land.
This ice blue realm of mystery
Plagued and bade mans mind.
His curiosity more potent
Than drink from off the vine.
And thus man struggled night and day
For wings to clone the sparrow's.
His efforts, not unlike the fledgling
Marginal and narrow.
Until, at last, man quenched this thirst
For knowledge of the restless sky.
He balanced all his nuts and bolts,
Created planes to fly!
But that was not the end of it,
Although he thanked the sparrow.
Man now saw above the clouds
His vision quite past narrow.
The vastness of the Universe,
The stars that captured his delight,
The moon and planets overhead,
Out of reach was man's new plight!
Yet man believed his destiny
And set his sight upon this quest;
As before, relentlessly,
Discovery burning in his chest.
Then one day it happened
The Rocket stood, its sky to face,
Man met the ever-glowing moon
Past the stars in outer Space!
