One day while I was fishing along a river path
A nurse came along with a smallest little lad
He wore a knitted cap and as she then explained
He's out for the day as cancer is what he had
I talked to him for awhile of and about fishing
So very interested was he as we talked that day
Just then I hooked the very smallest fish on my line
In seconds a water bird swooping fast then took it away
His excitement right then was so very incredible
He smiled so and this event had made his very day
Jumping up and down he shouted out did you see that
That big bird swooped and took your little fish away
His nurse then said he'll never ever forget that at all
Its just what the doctor ordered she then said to me
I took his name and his hospital address after that
When I visited him the nurse said he's not here sorry
We lost him last night in his struggle for his little life
But right until the very end he talked about your fish
All he wanted to do was advise all and every one of it
He'd loved that so much for more he couldn't wish
Such a spontaneous small event was that on the day
But it meant the entire world and much more to him
Something like that had made a dear little souls day
I can still hear the shouting and see that largest grin.
