Recycling

Where have the dead leaves gone?
Disintegrated, their atoms cast afar
Until maybe in eons to come
They become part of a star.
For nothing is wasted in this universe;
What is and was and has been
Is taken and shaken and stirred
In this ultimate recycling machine,
And maybe that new born star,
With that minute pinch of tree,
May also by that time contain
Maybe a little pinch or two of me.
So some of the essence
Of this once living man
Is returned to the stars
From where it first began.
The harmony of the spheres
Slides slowly inexorably on
While in less time than of a blink
Man can rise, peak, and be gone.
