The Lake District
I amble and ramble
and sample the sights -
the taste and the colour -
the loud and the quiet.
Lanes - edged in hedges -
stoney and strong -
narrow and curving -
endlessly long.
Meadows - so gentle
and sloping in green -
black and white faces -
woolly coat sheen.
Lakes - blue and jewelled -
diamond-like spots -
ferry boats sailing -
surrounded by yachts.
Towns - with stone houses -
ancient and quaint -
some raw and uneven -
some whitened with paint.
Gardens - in pastels
with splashes of green -
flowers in boxes
and baskets so clean.
Shops - small and cluttered
with all sorts of sweets -
fine, fresh and friendly -
tempting a treat.
Churches - with towers
reaching up high -
angels in halos
hover close by.
Hills - soft and luscious -
stretching in mounds -
gurgling streams splashing
and rippling around.
Statues - so stately
guarding the streets -
I amble by slowly
on holiday feet.
