Finding The Flood - Poems by Jeremy Joel

A TALK WITH SAM: AN ELEGY

During a mystic twilight hour my great-grandfather and I had an unlikely encounter
His death came before my demand for an answer
But alas he responded on an unsecured level

I showed him pictures of a younger man
Portraits of his life underwater and blurred
He smiled and shook my hand as I began to understand
The fateful steps we all must take
And the severity of the choices we regretfully make

How noble the captain looked, hat tilted to the side
Barely aged eyes ever so wide
Mahogany borders exuding pride
My version of Superman in black and white

Generations trickle through rapid eye movements
Childhood scenes replay in my mind
There's a message waiting at the end of the creek
Rice your tricycle there, take Madison Street

I wasn't "the boy" anymore
Just a disheveled man sitting next to another, bedside in a hospital
Looking into my eyes he began preaching the gospel
Fancying himself a cowboy he saddled up with my brother
And smoked a pipe with the Lord whose planets he's smuggled

In an atmospheric state my body began to shake
Window left open so our spirits escaped
Into the coolness of night drifting up through the clouds
A Heaven-sent elevator, the ceiling is the ground

Palms pressed parallel for one soul-searching week
A biblical tsunami has come to wash over me
I've been pondering the enigma of family ties
And how the sculpture of life is what you mold it to be

Stone faced and bitter I made the drive over
The love for my mother forced me to buckle
Solutions were necessary but at what cost and how quick?
Ironclad convictions were making us sick

Relief from resentment is less than a million miles
Come to grips with your hang-ups, no more denial
Skipping chapters rushing to the end of a fairytale
Storyline is shot to hell but you've never read it so well

Samuel wasn't as old as I last remembered
When rather abruptly we'd severely been severed
I wish I could turn back time; I'd like to propose a toast
He'd introduce me to Camilla as I take off their coats

Awakened by an ambulance this trance was over in a gasp
However his flame burns strong
Memorize the wisdom
Revel in the charm

Believing in the afterlife means succumbing to your past
Arrested and jailed into the brightest black
Could I forgive and forget in hopes of a fresh start?
When casualties cover the battlefield of my heart
Why live in a dream if you have to wake up?

Mortality is not a perfect science, ideologies sacrificed everyday
Sometimes it takes good ‘ole granddad slapping you in the face

I was overwhelmed by the saint but never knew the man
Is it absurd to believe he spoke to me last night?
Could he be surveying my life and shadowing my light?
Filtering my sight or listening to this plight?
Could he be guiding me towards an epiphany I'll realize one day all beaten and bloody?
To steal back my future, how lovely that'd be

Memories are like stacks of crisp hundreds piled high in the vault of a dream
The plot thickens as you bust the cameras
Become filthy rich in one mystic evening
