Finding The Flood - Poems by Jeremy Joel

BITS

Games we played, electronic and hypnotic
Bloodthirsty sheep sing nursery rhymes
Serious cartoons with axes to grind
Scanning barcodes and committing crimes
Nightmares programmed by Japanese men
Sold to Americans with disposable incomes
Numbers in the corner tally digital murder
Obnoxious clouds flood a battleship harbor

With the push of a button I draw my saber, one of many weapons gathered along my righteous journey
I've been transformed into a fantastical warrior, hunted by deformed henchmen spellbound by an evil wizard

Slimy dungeons, booby traps, and a giant beast with one eye
Dragon fire singeing the wee hairs of my spine
Weapons of martyrs, consciousness my armor
Thunderbolts winged by winged marmoset marauders
Rickety drawbridges and moss-covered castles
Nightfall has strangled the wick of my candle
They're chasing me
Intercontinental enemies with top-secret identities
A delicate princess can't feel her extremities
I am a mortal but I have to save lives
Potions and pixy dust will help me survive
Inside a haunted mansion skeletons come alive
Busting through crawl spaces when 12 o'clock chimes
Limbo's invaded, apparitions move through me
Rattling water pipes and rippling tapestries
Restless souls arise in the rain
Carving up their tombstones to make room for my name
I can hear grown men kneel, beg, and cry
Rising is suspicion of informants disguised
Throughout the land, on television, and in dreams
I'm the protagonist with a possessed parakeet
Bits of fear like a burial shroud
Scattered ashes on Navaho ground
Dinosaurs dismembered in prehistoric pastures
Eternal life granted with a secret password
Pangaea and Atlantis were defenseless against my army
Blown to seven shapes and to the bottom of the sea
The elixir of life kept in a woolen sleeve
Maximized in midair with a warlock's heave
Making history our grandchildren's grandchildren won't believe
A vengeful god this venison should appease

This realm is a labyrinth meant for performing
Finding the exodus before the first blush of morning
It's the flick of a light switch or a buzzing alarm
Or terrestrial imprints on the face of my palm
