Finding The Flood - Poems by Jeremy Joel

FALLEN WITNESS

Tears in toxicity
I still hear her cry
Years lost in ecstasy
Never cast aside
Parents deceased
Dark hours nearby

Breathe deep and dry your eyes, there's someone here for you tonight
Not everyone is destined to overdose or vanish from your life again
Not your future boyfriends or your sisters watching over them

Scars almost faded
     She wears lots of makeup
Rusted are the blades
At the bottom of the bathtub

In ripped fishnets and black nail polish
She defies conformity in ways society will never understand
Her mind is dying in San Diego and Los Angeles
But her heart is alive in London and Birmingham

She's mysterious, some say disturbed, talking about anarchy and free will
Spends her time worshipping Morrissey and swallowing little blue pills

She'll never get that passport; it's a silly pipe dream
How can you run away if you can't stand on your feet?

We were friends when friends were hard to come by
Skipping crowded sidewalks and talking late into the night

I drove the getaway car for every mind-blowing second
From liquor store entrance to emergency room exit

Now she's turned on me, no longer the savior, I've become the enemy
I'm everything she's come to despise
A security guard, the Gestapo, that watchful pair of eyes

No strings attached in our agreement of insanity
Reveling in our youth as we falsified identities

You say you're His Witness but does he approve of unorthodox affection?
Is this just a phase or a lack of attention?
I was privileged in your presence but now I'm shamed
You used me like a plaything and I did the same

Glass houses shattering, all we do is fight
Pick up your stones and get out of my sight

With secret notes and eyes let's keep quiet about lewd and lascivious nights
When our limbs tangled wildly way past our bedtime

Seatbelts bound deception in a well-traveled bed
Like the Montague's and Capulet's forced Romeo and Juliet

This recklessness we're having, could we ever be boring?
Could silence bring sanctity despite the paparazzi swarming?
Could you sleep soundly in the most regretful of mornings?

As long as there's an understanding we can defy popular opinion
Tip-toeing these tightropes as we rule our dominion

If we claim the headlines we're always in the tabloids
Popularity's intoxicating but it's a whole lot of noise

We failed on beach sand and down on the docks
Caught under the blankets but we just couldn't stop
An explicit example for the children up top

My last shift at work, you whisked me into a dark abandoned space
Begging for lip service and telltale signs on your face

Recognizable on my neck and a vampire replaced
That was the end of our relationship and the end of our disgrace
