70th. Anniversary of Pearl Harbor: A day that changed the world forever

On Dec. 7, 1941, the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor and drew the United States into World War II.
War already raged around the world, and it was inevitable that America would become involved in the
global conflict as it had a quarter-century earlier.Little did anyone suspect, however, that the war would come to us.
It was a Sunday morning when waves of planes of the Empire of the Rising Sun swooped down upon the
hapless American fleet at its Hawaiian port. By the time the surprise attack was over, a dozen ships
were sunk or beached, nine more were damaged, 164 U.S. aircraft were lost, and 2,390 Americans were dead.

America was stunned, but as one Japanese was said to have stated, they had awakened a sleeping giant.
A day later, our nation declared war, and the world would forever be changed by what the Pearl Harbor
attack had set into motion. Less than four years later, the United States emerged from the war not as a
world power, but as the world power to reckon with. The mobilization and industrialization of the war effort

carried over into the post-war years in an economic boom unlike any America had experienced before.
Not only was there an economic boom after the war, but a baby boom whose impact is felt today and will
continue to affect the country in years ahead. At the same time, those who were there, who fought the war
and who kept the country running at home are fading away. The youngest of them are in their 80s today, and

our actual, physical connection to Pearl Harbor and World War II is fading as well.
Soon, the responsibility of making sure what happened then is not forgotten will fall to those born in those
post-war years. It is our duty to make sure future generations will remember the significance of today's date,
the sacrifices that were made, the cost of stopping not only tyranny but evil as well and literally
saving the world. We of the Baby Boom Generation are obligated to preserve their legacy.
What happened 70 years ago is far more than a few paragraphs in a history text, or grainy black-and-white images
in a film. It was the turning point that shaped our world and our lives.

On this special day, we salute the survivors of Pearl Harbor who remain, we honor those who answered the clarion
call to action, and we thank all who sacrificed so much for their country, the world and the future.

It is likely that this year will be the last major anniversary of Pearl Harbour
in which a significant number of living veterans will attend to lend their stories in person.
Today, 70 years after,Pearl Harbour survivors and World War II veterans will join 3,000 guests
on Wednesday for the 70th anniversary of the 1941 bombing of Pearl Harbour. A moment of silence
will be observed at 1755GMT - the exact moment the attack began.

Note: Many were the times I sat at my Daddy's knees as he told wonderful war stories.
For us whose loved ones participated in WW1 & WW11-
We will never forget!
