The Promise

I woke up with a start
the phone ringing, I need to pick it up
a childhood friend just called up
he needed to see me at the nearby bus stop.

Rush I did to arrive on time
at the meeting place I waited a while
minutes turned to hour and a half
he didn't show up, I needed to go back.

On my track a boy came up
handed me a red rose with note on the card
words scribbled I couldn't decipher
the boy read, "I will love you forever."

Amazement washed over me
I couldn't imagine his love was meant to be
he used to say he'd find wherever I'd be
but never thought it had to be this way.

Strange reality crept in
up above clouds I was looking down at him
red roses he put over my coffin
I had to kiss him before his tears have fallen.
