This is me

Letter to UK House of Lords on Welfare Reform (Pre #spartacusreport)

Dear ...

Liberal Democrat Councillor Nathan Hartley (Deputy Leader of Bath and North East Somerset Council) has given me your contact details.

I am writing to respectfully ask you to oppose the government's plans for Welfare Reform.

As a sufferer of the physical disability cerebral palsy and a claimant of Disability Living Allowance, I am terrified of losing my benefit and having to face an ATOS assessment.

I feel that myself and other people in my situation are suffering enough.

I am unable to walk or stand unaided. I can't even begin to describe to you what it feels like to live with constant pain, not just physically but emotionally.

I am unable to stand long enough to make myself a meal or even a cup of tea without pain.

At age only thirty I have already been through so much. When I was fourteen I had major orthopaedic surgery and spent nearly four in hospital. Following that, I had to try and learn to walk from scratch.

My life has been a struggle and I wish I could explain to you the amount extra anxiety and stress the thought of losing my benefit has given to me and my husband. I am so anxious that I can't sleep, and this is on top of the physical and mental exhaustion that my condition has left me with. I'm also battling lifelong depression.

Other women my age have jobs and children. Due to my Cerebral palsy and the things detailed above neither of these things I will ever be able to do. It breaks my heart everyday.

My benefit enables me to get taxi's to visit friends, own a mobile phone to keep me safe, and pay for an internet connection so that I can keep in touch with people. It helps make a hard life more bearable by giving me a few choices.

There are so many others like me who haven't been as lucky as I have. I ask you, please, to help us by voting against the bill.

Many thanks

Yours Sincerely,

Mrs Helen Sims
