Irene's Treasure - Echoes of My Heart

{ The Wild Tempest {

The hurricane headed straight for Belize
At that time the country was at her best
I went home for a much needed winter's rest
But was caught in the storm's wild tempest

The tidal waves tumbled towards the shore
As the fingers of fear squeezed my throat
The wind blew rough kisses upon my cheeks
I trembled like a leaf in my thick rain coat

High tides splashed against the sea walls
The tall coconut trees danced and swayed
Objects flew like kites in the vicious wind
Everyone bowed their heads and prayed

The sea revealed its many different shades
Debris appeared in the water once green
All the boats were being moved to safety
The large pelicans were nowhere to be seen

The lighthouse withstood the storm's force
It's beam never wavered all through the night
It welcomed the new dawn standing strong
A beacon it remained in the early light

The path of Hurricane Richard passed directly over
Beize, Central America

Note:
At around 0045 UTC on October 25, 2011, Hurricane Richard made landfall
about 20 miles (35 km/h) south-southeast of Belize City. Throughout Belize,
Hurricane Richard damaged thousands of homes, leaving many without power.
The Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Center, a major attraction for ecotourists
and Belizeans was in its path and was heavily damaged forcing it to close 6 weeks
to remove debris and repair their animal exhibits. Some animals escaped.
The entire grapefruit harvest was lost, and several large trees were downed.
In addition, about 200 homes were destroyed.
