THE DELTA DEVILS OF BINH-THUY AIR BASE RVN 1968 - 1969

Photobucket

These brave young airmen were few in numbers
And despite their always being outnumbered
These airman stood their ground in battles

Though the enemy would try to destroy them
They never once wavered from their duties
And never had the Viet Cong overwhelm them

Regardless of the fact that they were cops
That they were never trained as infantrymen
As members of the Army and Marine Corp were

These proud and extremely brave young airmen
Defended their own airbase against all odds
And the Viet Cong quickly learned the lesson

When you were foolish enough to attack them
They would bring a world of hurt back on you
The enemy found they could not overrun them

Viet Cong called them the devils of the night
Our night shift cops were called Devil Flight

The U.S. Air Force did eventually train it's own specialized
group of light infantry to help defend our air bases and they
also had the heavier weapons like mortars and heavy .50 cal.
machine guns that we didn't have at first. They revised the
ways in which our air bases would be defended in all future
battles in Vietnam and later deployment actions and conflicts
in which they would serve. These units were sent over to the
Republic of Vietnam (RVN) just in time for the big Viet-Cong
and North Vietnamese push to divide up South Vietnam during
the Tet Offensive in 1968, but instead of them dividing South
Vietnam in two it became a total failure on the enemy's part
since they didn't think that our young airmen who were then
defending our air bases would be able to hold out against a
major assault by them. Well they were dead wrong and paid a
very heavy price to learn that lesson during the war.
