VIPER OF WINTER
Diagonal slashes
of anemic gold cut
across deepening gray
in a viper's eye sunset…
...threatening and forbidding
night slithers across the sky
wintertide stealing away warmth
from late fall; a cold-blooded larcenist
without warning, without permission
the season strikes swiftly,
unmercifully it unleashes
its venomous, biting chill…
…a subboreal twilight descends;
Earth sleeps in snowy paralysis,
bitten by its arctic affliction
awaiting release with the
advent of the spring sun
as its antidote
