MY OLD MAN

He shot me down
He shot me down
Made me afraid to leave P town
He watched me be
He didn't let me free
Now that old man can never come back again
And frighten me

He took my youth
My days of pretty
He took them for his lack of power
And made them sour
With fists that hurt
With words that burned
He took my youth
Sent it to hell
To burn

And burn I did
And burn I did
Behind his angry words I lived
They don't remember
They don't remember
But I remember every harsh thing you ever did
When you took this girl, and her life hid
Behind the fear of your breaking glass
Behind the fear when her parents died
Behind the fear of thinking she was crazy every time you lied

No more of you for me today
You went away
Forced away
Only a few years, since I've been freed
Of all you took in your vast greed
Gave me your sons
But I was not good enough to marry
Worked hard for my family
Even you I have carried
But it didn't matter in your mind
Because you were too blind
To ever see my shine
So many years ago
So many years ago
That if you could ever come back here
I'd buy a gun you know
To protect me from the likes of you
The likes of you
You took my young soul
For the likes of you.

Don't worry
He cannot steal your soul
He cannot steal your soul
You take a word from God and go
He let you down
He let you down
And it's all good
Because he can never come back around
To this town
And if he did
You're woman enough now
To come out in the open
Shoot down the man who took the kid.
