FREE OF THE ROGUE

sand between toes Pictures, Images and Photos

Toes clenched
I tried to hold on
for so long
as the sand collapsed
beneath them
streaming back
into the endless waves
that washed across the
submissive shore
pondering why I couldn't stop
digging in, my mind grasping

unable to release the hurt
enough to let him go:
self inflicted pain is
so addicting

it should have been so easy to do

it wasn't as if he ever really
loved me back, at least
not as I loved him
giving of myself to him
unabashedly

I don't think he was
capable of it

some people just don't feel
things as they should
but he threw me
off balance

with his pretty lies

with the way he said
he couldn't stay away
and every time we
got swept out to sea
every time we drew near
a rushing tide carried us
into a place of shared oblivion

until it didn't

one moment
one heartbeat
one indrawn breath
and it was over

and little by little
with insidious discovery
he has stolen the joy of it all
my memories a sham

without saying a word to me
he has become a canard
a shadow of sorts
the love offered to him
was undeserved
I wish only

that I could tell him so
