Grinning silly skull

Grinning, silly looking, bleached white the skull stares.

Bones held together by uniforms, be they German

or English:-  who  buries them and says a prayer

One statement they all make in their silly grinning way

is, welcome to the war.

Mons, Ypres, Suvla bay, Anzac Cove  names called war.

Running past those silly grinning skulls becomes normality.

Buildings torn and crushed, their skeletons ask too many questions.

No answers can we give we’ll soon be grinning, silly skulls.

Used to be afraid of seeing my first dead body, now brush it aside,

we need to lie down. Screaming and crying we live with, night and day.

What part of war do I understand? None of it, except kill, or be killed.

Grinning, silly, millions of skulls lying around, pick one without a uniform.

Who was he, what side did he die for, without the uniform, just a grinning skull.

All I wish for is a decent blighty wound, excuse me from this war.

Let me go home, honour my friends and comrade, but never will I honour war.
