A Forever Song of You

A distant memory
of nearness.
Early dawn light peering through
tentatively...
its golden rays shimmering through
a drawn shade
striping the bedroom wall.
The green sheets warm with your smell.
Robins warble cheerfully.
Their voices sift in through an open window.
Warmed air slides in raising the curtain
and outside the power lines hum.
The world is almost quiet.
I am quiet inside.
As I watch you breathing,
peace overtakes my body.
Your long lashes flutter
in deep sleep.
Grateful for the comfort of bed,
I curl my toes in,
kneading the soft blankets
some carelessly kicked
half-strewn to the floor.
The world is gentle.
I'd like to stay here with you,
there in that long ago morning.
In that distant memory
of the nearness of you.
Your warmth, your smell,
all a pleasant perfection-
a tunnel vision reflection
leading back to you.
Yet attached to the pleasantness
is a biting bit of bitter too.
For all times do get over,
the past passes
and I'm left with
a ghost morning
that forever will be you
the curtains will be rising
the sun will just have started shining
the robins will have sung their matin song
and I will forever be in the warm warm bed
watching, watching, watching over you.
