My GRANNIE  Happy Mother's Day

GRANNIE'S APRON POCKETS

Inside my grandma's apron pockets were all kinds of treasures
for us to explore - to keep us busy and from under foot

A small red ball with jacks to keep us girls happy for awhile
A small toy car for some naughty boy
A game with B Bs that rolled on the picture in its box
rolling around till they were placed in the right spot on the face
A long string that she would wrap around her hand and do all kinds of tricks
A deck of old maid card - A yo yo and always something for us to learn
Buttons of many colors laced on a string that we could count

Grandma was one of a kind - small and fit - always with a quick wit
She had a sharp tongue when needed - but a loving hug always followed
She told the best fairy tales - with twinkling blue eyes - and a bit of brogue
I could see a fairy dancing on the head of a pin or hiding under a leaf
or swimming in a drop of dew
She made the Land of Make Belief so very real

Her hands were small with brown spots from age and sun
I would hold them and press the skin on her knuckles
till I had all of them with little pleats in her skin
She was so patient with us
I never remember calling her grandma - Mrs. Della - was her name
That is what we called her - If she cared she never said
She was my father's mother and she adored him
That may be the reason my mother resented her so

She was a kind and dear little lady
I wish today that I had told her what she meant to me and that
I loved her -  I wish that I had called her  "Grandma"
