 Echo of Responsibility

Five weeks of playful delight;
Five weeks of fulfilling dreams.
Five weeks of waking when I desire;
Five weeks of not missing shift work.

I hear the seducing call of retirement;
So close now, I can taste the future.
I smile within, knowing the horizon;
But today I hear the echo of responsibility.

It's back to work tomorrow for me;
Time to shave this ole gray goatee.
Getting back into the rotating rhythm
Of the Southern Swing shift work.

The boiler beckons, desiring my touch;
Rested, relaxed, ready… I go back to work.
Hoping my gentleness extends forever;
Tomorrow I hear the echo of responsibility.

Five weeks of rejuvenation and relaxation;
Five weeks of time without constraints.
Five weeks of restoration, peace, tranquility;
Five weeks of living my life in freedom.

Now I hear the Mill's morning whistle.
I look at the stack reaching into the sky.
Packing my lunch box, lacing up the steel toes;
I respond to the echo of responsibility.
