What hidden force powered that wretched day?
Was it karma, bad luck, circumstances?
Or - maybe Rome’s imperfect justice?
Or political expediency?
Three strangers with a common destiny:
Publicly humiliated –
Racked with cruel and torturous pain,
Struggling, gasping, to their last breath.
Lives filled with bitterness, hate and greed,
Rebellious, no thought of justice, fairness,
Two callous thieves thumbing their noses,
Mouths cursing Imperial Rome’s justice.
No friends to bring comfort, support or cheer,
Forsaken rebels, murderers, plunderers,
Society’s outcasts, destiny sealed,
Rough forged nails of Rome life’s final constraint.
No priest could be found to give the last rights,
A Holy day approaches – must stay clean,
Two wretches, pain screaming from all quarters,
The last page of a vile life; all alone.
In the last hour, a miraculous change!
Nails still constraining both hands and feet,
But nails could not constrain their voices,
One heart repented of their evil past.
‘Remember me when your kingdom comes’
My death? Fair justice for my wick’d ways,
Your death? I can’t understand the injustice,
But remember me when your kingdom comes.
The central cross bore Christ’s title,
‘King of the Jews’, nailed to the central tree,
Would he listen to such a wicked wretch?
Would he even want him in his kingdom?
Could this King once again respond to one,
One like the woman of ill repute,
One who cleansed his feet with tears and hair,
The one despised by her kith and kin.
Destiny changed in that dreadful hour,
Jesus heard that pained and earnest plea,
‘Today’ he said, yes this very day,
‘You will be in Paradise with me.’
