TRAIN TRACKS and YESTERDAY

TRAIN TRACKS and YESTERDAY

I looked at the train tracks and heard the whistle in the distance
my mind began to wonder

When was these tracks first laid
Who nailed the nails in the rods of metal

How long was it they went without seeing their families
Where did these tracks start

What made man think of a train on tracks
It must have been someone with an adventurous spirit

I recalled the movies I saw as a child
the railroad connecting the east coast to the west coast

The hardships  those men went through
blasting with TNT to make way through rough mountains

The rain and cold and endless hot days
The meager salary they were paid

Now it is very rare to see a train
they seem to be going the way of the horse and buggy

One year for Christmas my sister gave her husband
a vintage Lionel train

My silver haired honey and he put it together
they played all night long with the train

Do little boys ever grow up
Do they ever stop wanting a miniture train

I hope they don't - it is good to see  grown men
excited over trains and other childhood memories

On the way home from out west we raced a train  "WE WON"
