Collateral Damage
Was not to be this way for them
The fights, language not comprehend
Yet for their age they witnessed all
The blow by blows the so called falls
Too young she'd birth family too soon
Thinking her love his heart she'd swoon
But not this day of those to come
This fate was hers still yet not done
Her will to keep family together
His way was just how much she weathered
A slap, a punch, a kick when down
Leaving his wrath on her not sound
The ringing in her ear from blows
The swollen lips and eyelids closed
How much more of this to take
If death should come she'd choose not wake
But in cross-hairs of scope at home
Where five too young to leave alone
Alone to have his way with them
A piece of her, he'd too condemn
Love like this should never be
As random acts birthed fear sensibly
Into submission, into his will
Prescription meds she'd need to fill
Fill this day but be alert
To hear footsteps nearing she cursed
This man who vowed to love, protect
The years exposed the truth no less
and so she went as much she could
So much so, so much withstood
Until the day she said no more
Her will to fight to even score
One for her and two for them
Three agency who did not lend
An ear to carnage on the rise
A hand to help to cut this tie
Free, today she runs alone
As faith would rise and too new home
Where safe her children now do sleep
As she keeps watch, of them she keeps
and though fallout became of them
Her will keeps tab to comprehend
That no one man shall ever lay
A hand on her or kids thought prey
