TIME IN A BOTTLE



TIME IN A BOTTLE

I remember it like it was yesterday why is it the things that are the sweetest
are the easiest to remember and the easiest to forget

We were out in the Gulf of Mexico the sky was full of wisps of clouds
It was a perfect day - we were supposed to be fishing

We were really just relaxing in the sun wind and salt spray
I finish my coke and did not want to go down to the galley

I was about to toss the bottle into the deep water
You caught my hand and said "Let's write a note and put it in the bottle"

Setting at the table you and I both wrote
a message each to go in the bottle

I wrote "It is good to be alive out here in the Gulf of Mexico
It makes me happy to just be with you  -  you are the one I will love forever"

I did not read what you wrote - You did not read what I wrote
Together we toss the bottle with our notes overboard

Years came and went
Life has a way of taking and giving

I thought we would grow old together
But it did not happen that way

One day you left and went on high
I was left here alone wanting to die

Walking on the beach  one day in Pensacola
My toes touched a coke bottle buried in the sand

I knelt down and picked up the bottle
My heart was beating so fast

Inside the bottle was two notes
I recognized them from when we tossed them in the water

Holding it close to my heart I ran back
to my blanket on the beach

I sat with tears in my eyes and opened the cap
I read my note to you  -  then I read your note to me

I am thankful we wrote those letters so long ago
I remember the way you looked at me with love in your eyes

I remember it like it was yesterday why is it the things that are so
painful are the easiest to remember and the hardest to let go of
