Have you ever been in a situation when you have asked “What have I done to deserve this?” - When something has not gone as you would have liked it? I have, many times.
But I wonder if we are we focusing on the right ‘this’ when we ask this question.
There is a ‘this’ which is extremely important. When we look at it, it may evaporate all the other ‘this's’ that we trouble ourselves with. Here it is:
God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16.
Eternal life... What have I done to deserve this?
Nothing.
What can I do to deserve this?
Nothing.
But can that really be the case?..
Romans 5 says:
You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Romans 5:6-8
We read here that we do not deserve eternity in Heaven. We can do nothing to deserve eternity in Heaven. ‘Deserve’ is out of the question as far as we are concerned.
But we can be in Heaven for eternity through Jesus Christ who is worthy, more than deserving and has secured salvation for those who want to receive it.
While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. It is a wonderful free gift.
