But God—so rich is He in His mercy! Because of and in order to satisfy the great and wonderful and intense love with which He loved us,
Even when we were dead (slain) by [our own] shortcomings and trespasses, He made us alive together in fellowship and in union with Christ; [He gave us the very life of Christ Himself, the same new life with which He quickened Him, for] it is by grace (His favour and mercy which you did not deserve) that you are saved (delivered from judgment and made partakers of Christ’s salvation).
And He raised us up together with Him and made us sit down together [giving us joint seating with Him] in the heavenly sphere [by virtue of our being] in Christ Jesus (the Messiah, the Anointed One).
He did this that He might clearly demonstrate through the ages to come the immeasurable (limitless, surpassing) riches of His free grace (His unmerited favour) in [His] kindness and goodness of heart toward us in Christ Jesus.
For it is by free grace (God’s unmerited favour) that you are saved (delivered from judgment and made partakers of Christ’s salvation) through [your] faith. And this [salvation] is not of yourselves [of your own doing, it came not through your own striving], but it is the gift of God;
Ephesians 2:4-8
Amplified Bible
God has grace, love, kindness for all who receive it. Something of that magnitude sounds like it would require a lot of effort from us to receive.
However, it does not take the type of effort we would normally think of because the effort has already been successfully made.
God’s grace, love, riches.. are available to us. Our efforts do not determine the receipt of this. If we get things wrong; do not do what we wanted to get done during the day; behaved in a way we wish we had not towards someone... that does not determine the receiving of God’s riches.
Faith determines it. We receive it as a free gift in full trust in God through what Christ did.
All of what God has for us is received through believing that it is a free gift and that the arrangements and sacrifice has already been made for us to receive it.
There is some effort involved. Circumstances battle with us to try to make us believe that we have to strive to receive Christ. The effort required; is to continue believing that God’s grace is still freely available to us during the battle. We are to read the Bible and meditate on it and ask God for guidance and wisdom. The reality of this free grace will become more and more apparent as it delivers peace and victory to us during more and more circumstances.
That way, we can say ‘I have been saved by the grace of God’ and as we journey ‘I am being maintained by the grace of God’.
An amazing gift.
